We managed to get an episode up just in the nick of time — enjoy this short and sweet episode featuring some upcoming gigs and their performers this week, including a couple of sets at Vito’s, and a closing set featuring drummer Brad Gibson… plus we debut the new album from pianist Alex Guilbert…
1. Carolyn Graye – “The Footprints”
From the CD Poems By Denise Levertov (Pony Boy Records)
Carolyn is equally adept as a vocalist and pianist. Her latest CD is a very cool collection of tunes based on the poems of Denise Levertov. Surrounded by a first-call band of Phil Sparks on bass, John Stowell on guitar, Hans Teuber on sax and clarinet, Gary Hobbs on drums and percussion and Jim Knapp on trumpet, she lays down beautiful foundations for the poems. This track features great playing by all and a short poem at the very end of the track.
Upcoming gig: 9/18 at Egan’s, 7pm
2. Tim Kennedy – “Mingus in Springtime”
From the CD Where We Live (self-produced)
Tim will be bringing his trio to Vito’s this next week… you’ll have to go to the gig to find out who the sidemen are, but it’s a safe bet one of his two compadres in Gravity will be there…
Upcoming gig: 9/20 at Vito’s, 9pm
3. Sonando – “Wild Flower”
From the CD Tres (Origin Records)
Here’s another frequently gigging band that we haven’t featured much on the podcast, and in light of heir upcoming gig, it was time to do it again! Fred Hoadley has been leading the band Sonando for years, bringing killer Latin Jazz to the Pacific Northwest.
Upcoming gig: 9/20 at Tula’s, 7pm
4. Alex Guilbert — “Everywhere Stranger”
From the album “On The Ground” (self-produced)
Pianist Alex Guilbert is a regular at the New Orleans on Tuesdays with the Holotradband and also appears on rotation at Serafina, but it’s rare to hear him in trio format — thankfully he’s released a fabulous new record we are debuting here today, with more to come in the future.
5. Gibson and Gibson — “5 on 4″
From the album “The Amber Tone” (self-produced)
Brad Gibson is a busy drummer in town as a sideman and leader, bringing his trio to Vito’s later this week. Here him here with a fabulous quintet of fellow Gibson Clark Gibson, Jon Hamar, Brian Bermudez, and Dawn Clement.
Upcoming gig: 9/19 at Vito’s, 9pm
Be sure to listen to the end of the podcast about remembrances of Gaye Anderson — we’d love to hear from you at 206-984-2410. See you next time!
