We have alto saxes, we have singers, we have a guitar player and we have a very exiting announcement about a new venue run by a Seattle jazz scene luminary. Now that’s a show!
If you like any of the music you hear, please support the artists and purchase their album by clicking on the CD cover.
- Tracy Knoop – “Stella By Starlight”
From the CD Getting Sentimental (Pony Boy Records)
We were excited to see that Tracy Knoop and Clark Gibson were teaming up for an alto duel at Hiroshi’s this week for the Jazz & Sushi party. When two players of the same instrument go head-to-head there’s always fireworks to be had! Backing the two altos will be the able rhythm section of Dave Peterson on guitar, Chris Symer on bass and Greg Williamson on drums. This track from Tracy’s album features John Hansen on piano, Larry Holloway on bass and Greg on drums.
Upcoming show: Fri., Nov. 25th @ Hiroshi’s - Clark Gibson – “Praise For The Icons”
From the CD Iapetus (Pony Boy Records)
Clark has been studying in Chicago but he finds time to return to Seattle to play pretty frequently. We love this tune from his debut CD. Whether you call it a little big band or a big combo, the playing is stellar from Clark and Mike West on alto, Chris Stover and Nathan Vetter on trombone, Mack Grout on piano, Phil Sparks on bass and Adam Kessler on drums.
Upcoming show: Fri., Nov. 25th @ Hiroshi’s - Operation ID – “Where Are You?”
From the CD Legs (Table and Chairs Music)
Our third alto of the week is Ivan Arteaga, who is curating the Racer Sessions this week. Ivan is a great player and composer and his previous Racer Sessions have been really cool. Check out his explanation of this week’s session at the link above, and enjoy this track from his band Operation ID, featuring Jared Borkowski on guitar, Rob Hanlon on keys, David Balatero on bass and Evan Woodle on drums.
Upcoming show: Sun., Nov. 27th @ Cafe Racer - New York Composers Orchestra – “Prodigal Son Revisited”
From the CD New York Composers Orchestra (New World Records)
We got very exciting new this week when we learned that Wayne Horvitz is teaming up with the owners of the dearly departed OK Hotel to open an brand new venue in Columbia City called The Royal Room. If you weren’t in Seattle in the 90′s you missed out on the great scene that was the OK Hotel. We hope that Wayne’s new club will bring that hang back. You can read about it here as you listen to Wayne’s composition from the NYCO. - Chris Spencer – “Unit Seven”
Exclusive Unreleased Track
We’ve played guitarist Chris Spencer as part of other people’s records on the podcast before, but we’ve never had a chance to featuring him as a leader until now. He doesn’t play under his own name that often (you gotta fix that, Chris!), but this week he’s joining Tad Britton and Jeff Johnson at the weekly Thaiku Monday night session, along with a special mystery guest. That’s enough to make us want to go! Here he is with his trio of Chuck Kistler on bass and Byron Vannoy on drums.
Upcoming show: Mon., Nov. 28th @ Thaiku - Katie King – “Harry’s Fight”
From the CD Harry’s Fight (OA2 Records)
Katie King is a fixture on the Seattle jazz scene and we’ve yet to feature her on the podcast. We’re happy to rectify that this week with this great original tune from her latest CD with a killer band of Bill Anschell on piano, Jeff Johnson on bass, D’Vonne Lewis on drums and Craig Flory on sax. She’s a regular at Tula’s, where she’ll be again this Wednesday.
Upcoming show: Wed., Nov. 30th @ Tula’s - Cocoa Martini – “Avalon”
Exclusive unreleased live track, recorded for ArtZone
Cocoa Martini is the vocal trio of Kimberly Reason, Kay Bailey and Nadine Shanti. They have been wowing crowds for 4 years now and they are back at the Triple Door this weekend for a show that is sure to be a sell out, backed by Bill Anschell on piano, Chuck Kistler on bass and Brian Kirk on drums. On this track recorded for ArtZone it’s founding member Karen Shivers instead of Shanti with Eric Verlinde on piano and Doug Miller on bass.
Upcoming show: Sun., Nov. 27th @ The Triple Door
We hope you’ll show these great Seattle jazz artists your support by attending the shows and/or buying their CDs.
