The Young Lizards – “Katrina Ballerina”
From the CD Our Modern Lifestyle (Pony Boy Records)
The Young Lizards put out a great record earlier this year and we’re glad they are playing out fairly regularly. With four of the busiest musicians on the Seattle jazz scene (Chris Fagan on sax, Dave Peterson on guitar, Ty Bailie on organ and Greg Williamson on drums) it’s nice that they are finding time. They play up at Boxley’s in North Bend this week, and it’s sure to be hot inside the club even if it’s freezing outside!
Upcoming show: Wed., Dec. 14th @

    Jay Thomas – “Spring Canon”
From the CD The Underdog (Pony Boy Records)
Trumpet and sax master Jay Thomas trots out his Hard Bop Quartet again this week to run through the great 60′s repertoire, and there’s no one better qualified to play this music with authenticity! The band will be burnin’, as they are on this live cut featuring John Hansen on piano, Russ Botten on bass and Jon Wikan on drums.
    Upcoming show: Fri., Dec. 9th @ Tula’s

Bernie Jacobs – “Betty & Me”
    Exclusive unreleased track
Bernie Jacobs and his quartet are the featured artist at the Jazz & Sushi session at Hiroshi’s this week. This weekly hit has been running for 5 years now, spotlighting a different artist from the Pony Boy stable each week. The food is excellent, the hang is fun and the music is always great! Bernie is one of the most captivating performers you’ll see. Whether he’s playing sax, flute or singing he always brings his joy to bear. This is his reworking of the Benny Golson classic “Along Came Betty”, with original lyrics and a great rhythm section of Darrius Willrich on piano, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass and D’Vonne Lewis on drums.
    Upcoming show: Fri., Dec. 9th @ Hiroshi’s

    Jason Parker Quartet – “Contact”
From the CD Live at JazzTV (Broken Time Records)
Our co-host Jason Parker brings his quartet back to Vito’s this week. Vito’s is becoming quite the hang and a great place to check out music with no cover, great food and drinks, and a very cool vibe. The JPQ will be trying out some new material and welcoming a few special guests at this show. This is an original by Parker with Josh Rawlings on piano, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass and D’Vonne Lewis on drums.
    Upcoming show: Tues., Dec. 13th @ Vito’s

Human Spirit – “Hiding In Public”
From the CD Human Spirit (Origin Records)
Human Spirit started out as an album from trumpeter Thomas Marriott but has turned into a collective featuring co-leaders Marriott, Mark Taylor and Matt Jorgensen. The band plays tunes by all three leaders as well as a few choice standards and covers. They’ve been rotating the other members of the band, and this week they’ll be joined by Bill Anschell on piano and Mark Hunter on bass. This track features Gary Versace on organ.
    Upcoming show: Sat., Dec. 10th @ Tula’s

The Schwa – Western Shirts and the Creaking Chair”
From the CD Cosmonaut Cowboy (self-produced)
The Schwa is a great new group featuring Justin Sorenson on vibes, Chris Credit on reeds, Bob Rees on drums and Geoff Larson on bass. They describe their music as “ambient to the avant garde”, which perfectly describes this track from their new EP. We look forward to seeing what kind of territory these guys cover as they play more and more.
Upcoming show: Sat., Dec, 10th @ Lucid
