Jazz Now! Seattle – Episode 77

It’s a quick one this week, but we have great music from both members of a never-before-seen duo performing this week, a long-standing trio, a Cal Tjader tribute and one of the hot up-and-coming bands on the Seattle jazz scene.

If you like any of the music you hear, please support the artists and purchase their album by clicking on the CD cover.

Tom Varner – “The Trilling Clouds”
From the CD Heaven and Hell (Omnitone Records)
French horn master Tom Varner teams up in a duo with pianist Bill Anschell this week. We’re not sure, but we don’t think they’ve ever played like this before, but these two masters are sure to get into some telepathic play! They are part of the new Friday series at Creative Music Adventures, which has been featuring some really great music lately. This track is from Tom’s latest album and features Russ Johnson on trumpet, Chris Stover on trombone, Jessie Canterbury on clarinet, Mark Taylor on alto saxophone, Saul Cline on soprano saxophone, Eric Barber on tenor saxophone, Jim DeJoie on baritone saxophone, Phil Sparks on bass and Byron Vannoy on drums.
Upcoming show: Fri., Mar. 16 @ Creative Music Adventures

Bill Anschell – “Big Yellow Taxi”
From the CD Figments (Origin Records)
The other half of the duo at CMA this week has been nominated for Record of the Year at the Earshot Golden Ear Awards this year (you still have a couple weeks to vote!). His solo CD is stunning, showing an artist alone and unfettered, able to take the tunes anywhere he wants them to go. This version of Joni Mitchell’s hit song is a great example, with Bill playing all over the piano, including inside!
Upcoming show: Fri., Mar. 16 @ Creative Music Adventures

    Susan Pascal – “Cubano Chant”
    Exclusive Unreleased Track
Jazz musicians love to pay tribute to their heroes and influences, and Susan Pascal has paid tribute to Cal Tjader many times over the years, calling the show “Soul Sauce”. She and her great band will play the show at the Eastside Jazz Club this weekend, with Fred Hoadley on piano, Chuck Deardorf on bass and Mark Ivester on drums. Here they are playing Ray Bryant’s biggest hit, with Dave Peterson on guitar along with Deardorf and Ivester.

    Hardcoretet – “Santa Barbara”
From the CD Do It Live (self-released)
Hardcoretet are one of the hardest working bands on the Seattle Jazz Scene. They have been touring, recording and playing frequently over the last couple years and have really honed a group sound and presentation. The band is Art Brown on alto sax, Aaron Otheim on keyboards, Tim Carey on bass and Tarik Abouzied on drums. They are playing the intimate confines of Egan’s this week, which is a great place to catch a show!
    Upcoming show: Thurs., Mar. 22nd @ Egan’s

See you in the clubs!
