We’re just 10 weeks from episode 100! This week we have trumpeters teaming up, Frisell playing Lennon, big band, soul jazz, chamber jazz and a special guest from Iceland.
If you like any of the music you hear, please support the artists and purchase their album by clicking on the CD cover.
- Jay Thomas – “Kinnickinick”
From the CD Accidentally Yours (McVouty Records)
Trumpet/Sax wiz Jay Thomas adds trumpeter Thomas Marriott to his regular working quartet with John Hansen on piano, Chuck Kistler on bass and Adam Kessler for a show at the Eastside Jazz Club this week. Sparks are sure to fly as these two trade licks on bop and hard bop classics and lesser-known charts. If you haven’t yet been to a show at the EJC this’d be a great one to start with!
Upcoming show: Tues., June 19th @ Eastside Jazz Club - McTuff – “Tuff Love”
From the CD Volume 1 (self-produced)
McTuff brings their funky brand of soul jazz to the newly reopened Bake’s Place in downtown Bellevue this week. The new room is gorgeous and sounds amazing and will be a great showcase for McTuff, with Joe Doria on B-3, Andy Coe on guitar, Cliff Colon on sax and Tarik Abouzied on drums. If you can’t make that show, they are also playing at the White Rabbit with Richie Aldente this weekend.
Upcoming shows: Fri., June 15th @ White Rabbit & Wed., June 20th @ Bake’s Place - Bill Frisell – “Across the Universe”
From the CD All We Are Saying (Savoy Jazz)
Bill Frisell’s latest album is a tribute to John Lennon, and the guitar master puts his signature stamp on these great tunes. The band is full of heavy hitters, including Jenny Scheinman on violin, Tony Scherr on bass, Greg Leisz on steel guitar and Kenny Wollensen on drums. That band, minus Scheinman, will be play the music this weekend at Jazz Alley.
Upcoming shows: Fri.-Sun., June 15-17 @ Jazz Alley - Andy Clausen – “Split Stream”
From the CD Live 2.21.10 (self-produced)
Andy Clausen brings his Split Stream Big Band to the Royal Room this week. He’s back from Julliard for the summer and we’re glad he’s playing so many shows! This band features some of the best young players in the city: Nathan Yale, Andrian Noteboom & Xavier del Castillo on saxes, Riley Mulherkar & Cory Dansereau on trumpets, Andy Clausen & Willem De Koch on bones, Julian Garvue on piano, Nolan Woodle on bass and Thomas Campbell on drums.
Upcoming show: Mon., June 18th @ The Royal Room - Tunnel Six – “Moose Warrior”
From the CD Lake Superior (OA2 Records)
Tunnel Six is one of trumpeter Chad McCullough’s projects. He met the other members at the Banff Workshop a few years ago and since then they have released a great debut record and done extensive touring in Canada and the West Coast. They’ll be stopping at Tula’s this week to end their latest tour, and they’ve been recording the follow up CD, so you’re sure to hear new tunes and old favorites. Chad is joined by Ben Dietschi on sax, Andrew Oliver on piano, Brian Seligman on guitar, Ron Hynes on bass and Tyson Stubelek on drums.
Upcoming show: Wed., June 20th @ Tula’s - Sunna Gunnlaugs – “Fyrir Brynhildi”
From the CD Long Pair Bond (self-produced)
We’re breaking one of our long-standing rules with this one. We generally play only Seattle-based artists, but Sunna Gunnlaugs is a favorite of our and her show is one we think you need to know about. Sunna hails from Reykjavik, Iceland and doesn’t get to the West Coast often, but you have a chance to see her great trio this week at Tula’s. With Þorgrímur Jónsson on bass and Scott McLemore on drums, she released a gorgeous album last year. Check out this track to hear the cinematic and cohesive playing of this great group, and then get to Tula’s to see them live!
Upcoming show: Thurs., June 21st @ Tula’s
See you in the clubs!
