- Overton Berry – “Compared To What”
From the CD TOBE (self-produced)
Overton Berry is one of the true gems of the Seattle jazz scene. His piano and vocals have been gracing stages for decades and he’s still going strong! This week he’ll bring his trio with Jeff Davies on bass and Rick Spano on drums to Egan’s for two sets. They’ll be joined by vocalist Kate Wirth on the first set and cellist Louie Richmond for the second set. Here’s a classic from way back with Curtis Stovall on bass and Bill Kotick on drums.
Upcoming show: Sat., July 14th @ Egan’s - Whitney James – “Whisper Not”
From the CD The Nature of Love (Damselfly Records)
Vocalist Whitney James is a Seattle native who has been splitting her time between New York and Florida in recent years. We still claim her as our own and we’re glad she’ll be back to play at the new Bake’s Place in downtown Bellevue this weekend, with a crack band of Joshua Wolff on piano, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass, D’Vonne Lewis on drums and Thomas Marriott on trumpet. Here’s one from her debut record with Wolff, Ingrid Jensen on flugelhorn, Matt Clohsey on bass and Jon Wikan on drums.
Upcoming show: Sun., July 15th @ Bake’s Place - Johnaye Kendrick – “Umbrella”
Exclusive Unreleased Track
Johnaye Kendrick came to town and quickly assembled a top-flight band with Dawn Clement on piano, Chris Symer on bass and Byron Vannoy on drums. The quartet has been playing around town to rave reviews and they’re at it again this weekend at the Royal Room. Be sure to catch this exciting vocalist and relative newcomer to the Seattle jazz scene.
Upcoming show: Fri., July 13th @ The Royal Room - Sweeter Than The Day – “A Walk In The Rain”
From the CD A Walk In The Dark (self-produced)
You have a great chance to catch Sweeter Than The Day this week with Wayne Horvitz on keys, Tim Young on guitar, Keith Lowe on bass and Eric Eagle on drums. They are playing the Jefferson Park Jubilee in South Seattle, a full day of music, art and activities celebrating the diversity of the neighborhood. Sounds like a great time!
Upcoming show: Sat., July 14th @ Jefferson Park Jubilee - Ask The Ages – “Journey To Satchidinanda”
Exclusive Unreleased Track
Ask The Ages teams up with Moraine for a benefit concert for the victims of the Cafe Racer shooting this week at The Chapel. You’ll get a great night of music and help raise money for a very worthy cause, one near and dear to us here at JNS and the Seattle music scene. Come out and show your support!
Upcoming show: Fri., July 13th @ The Chapel - Burn List – Sonarchy Radio Excerpt
From Sonarchy Radio Broadcast
Burn List is Cuong Vu on trumpet, Greg Sinabaldi on reeds, Aaron Otheim on keys and Chris Icasiano on drums. The multi-generational band shows off the type of music that’s been coming out of the UW music school since Cuong joined the faculty a few years back. The band is playing The Mix in Georgetown this week and is sure to tear the roof off the joint! Look for their debut album coming soon!
Upcoming show: Tues., July 17th @ The Mix - Ghidra – “Hard Boiled On The Wharf”
From the Album The Sound of Speed (Sol Disk)
Ghidra features Wally Shoup on sax, Bill Horist on guitar and Mike Peterson on drums. Bill is part of Earshot’s “Jazz in the 2nd Century” series that continues this week. He’ll be playing along with Trio Orangutan is a powerhouse of a double-bill. These shows are designed to show the direction of jazz in the next 100 years and are always entertaining and exciting.
Upcoming show: Thurs., July 19th @ Jazz in the 2nd Century
