- Thomas Marriott & Ray Vega – “Bishop Island”
From the CD East West Trumpet Summit (Origin Records)
Thomas Marriott and Ray Vega team up with Jim Rotondi, Jay Thomas and Jim Sisko for a 5 trumpet blow-out at Tula’s this week. They did a show similar to this earlier in the year and it was an incredible night. Come see what happens when 5 of the best trumpeters on the planet team up! This track shows Tom and Ray having fun.
Upcoming show: Mon., Aug. 13th @ Tula’s - Anton Schwartz – “Alligator Strut”
From the CD Radiant Blue (self-produced)
Tenor player Anton Schwartz is a recent transplant to the Seattle area and he’s been busy ever since he got here! This week he plays Tula’s with a quintet that includes Randy Halberstadt on piano, Milo Peterson on guitar, Jeff Johnson on bass and Mark Ivester on drums. We love this track from his latest CD with Peter Bernstein, Taylor Eigsti, John Shifflet and Tim Bulkley.
Upcoming show: Fri., Aug. 10th @ Tula’s - Jay Thomas – “Both And”
From the CD The Underdog (Pony Boy Records)
In addition to playing the aforementioned trumpet blowout, Jay brings his quartet to The Royal Room this week. We’re not sure who’s in the band but you can bet the music will be swingin’! Something like you hear on this track featuring John Hansen on piano, Paul Gabrielson on bass and Jon Wikan on drums.
Upcoming show: Sun., Aug. 12th @ The Royal Room - Bernie Jacobs – “A Night In Tunisia”
From the CD One By One (Pony Boy Records)
Bernie Jacobs recorded his latest album live at Boxley’s in North Bend, and be brings the band back there this week for another go round. Randy Halberstadt on piano, Chuck Kistler on bass and Greg Williamson on drums make his recording super tight and swingin’ and you can expect nothing less if you check out the band live. Bernie is a great performer, and he’ll blow you away on sax, flute and vocals.
Upcoming show: Sat., Aug. 11th @ Boxley’s - Bill Anschell – “Faster Than The Speed of Mildew”
From the CD More To The Ear Than Meets The Eye (Origin Records)
Bill Anschell is just one of many performers featured at this year’s North City Jazz Walk, which takes place on Tuesday in multiple venues in Shoreline. The trio will consist of Chris Symer and Jose Martinez…can’t go wrong with those cats! Check the website for the full list of performers.
Upcoming show: Tues., Aug. 14th @ North City Jazz Walk - Wally Shoup Quartet – Exclusive Excerpt
From Sonarchy Radio
Saxophonist Wally Shoup and his quartet with Gust Burns on piano, John Seman on bass and Mark Ostrowski on drums has been playing regularly at Vito’s for the past year and honing a unique sound and vision. They bring that vision to The Royal Room this week where they can really open up and blow. Should be an explosive night of music that, in Wally’s words, will “mix full-out free jazz with the jazz/blues ‘atmospherics’ we’ve developed over the past year at Vito’s. As you know, that room precludes high-energy playing, but, at the Royal Room, we’re going to explore the whole repetoire, which includes the type of music on this Sonarchy session”. Awwww yeah!
Upcoming show: Mon., Aug. 13th @ The Royal Room - Rochelle House – “Nature’s Way”
From the CD Water (self-produced)
Vocalist Rochelle House consistently surrounds herself with the finest players from the Seattle jazz scene. Her show at The Royal Room this week will feature Dawn Clement on piano, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass and D’Vonne Lewis on drums. This rock-solid rhythm section is the perfect foil for House’s floating vocal style, as is the group on her latest album, with Evan and D’Vonne along with Marc Seales on keys and Cuong Vu on trumpet.
Upcoming show: Tues., Aug. 14th @ The Royal Room
See you in the clubs!
